Journal of Weekly Activity

March 11

March 11th was the best day of my life.  It was "the day".  The day I got my MacBook Pro.  I went to the MacMedia store: http://www.macmedia.comweeblylink_new_window.  That is their link.  This is where I got my brand new Apple MacBook Pro.  I got the 15 inch model.  It's so sweet!!!!  I also got an Apple Magic Mouse, a new desk and a new office chair!  I have been learning how to use my MacBook Pro ever since that Friday.

So now that I have my Mac, what will happen now?
My brother and sister really want a MacBook too.  So I will keep the program going and my brother and sister will be recycling so they can get a Mac, just like me.  I will call the program "Recycling for MacBook" instead of "Ian's Recycling for MacBook".  I will let my brother and sister crush most of the cans.  We will split the profit into thirds so me, my brother and my sister will get equal amounts of the profit.  So the program will just keep going and going.

This post was "Made on a Mac"

January 3-February 12

Guess where I went today?  The recycling center!!!!!  Cans have gone up in price; they are now $1.05 a pound.  $1.05 compared to $0.85 a pound when I started a year ago.  Overall, I came back with $141.30!  This has me even closer to my goal.  I now have about $1,450.  Crush... Crush... Crush...

November 16-January 2

I went to the recycling center with 117 pounds of cans, and came back with $121!  Then, my friendly neighbors got their AC redone and there was a ton of scrap metal just waiting to be thrown out.  Even though it was only a bunch of garbage, I saw pure gold.  So I went to ask the AC installers if I could have it and they said "Sure, it saves me the work of taking it back to the company."  I was so happy!  Now my dad and I are taking out all of the copper that is in the AC units and coils.  The recycling price on copper is $2.65 a pound!  Let me tell you, all the copper that we have taken out so far weighs a lot!  Maybe 60 pounds!  I can't wait to get down to the recycling canter again!

October 22-November 15

Hey guys, I have updated my photos page and my goal as a graph page.  Make sure you check them out.  The photos of the cans in the back of the car are from my Tuesday night pick up.  That night was a really good night.

August 27-October 21

Well I went to the recycling center again!!!!!  This time, they were giving me 90 cents a pound!!!  I went with 140 pounds of cans!  They almost didn't fit in the car, because some of them were not crushed.  My dad and I wanted to take most of my cans to the recycling and that meant even the ones that were not crushed.  I learned a valuable lesson: That I need to crush the cans before my dad and I take them to the recycling center.

The car was so full, my dad could only see about two feet of the back window.  Now I am even closer to my goal, I have $655.10 towards my Macbook which includes donations and other money I have saved.

August 26-September 6

My dad and I went to the recycling center again with 183 pounds of cans!  They almost didn't fit in the car!  I am now at 20%  of my $2000 goal!

Check out my new "Goal as a Graph" page.  It  show how close to my goal I am in amounts of cans.

July 27-August 25, 2010

I keep getting cans and crushing them.  Dad and I are going to the recycling center next week because I have a lot of crushed cans.  Every time I go, I get closer to getting my MacBook.

July 12-26, 2010

My mom went to California and saw this can and thought of me!  How cool and it is her favorite beverage with 4 extra ounces.  A few new people have texted me to pick up their cans by their garage door.  It has been really hot crushing cans in the garage.  I am going to put out more fliers this week and I hope I get more program participants before school starts again.  It is kinda funny that my mom's friends see her and instantly think of me and the cans they are saving for me.  I really appreciate all the help.  I really want my MacBook!

July 1-9, 2010

My dad and I went to the recycling center, again.  This time we had to go to a different recycling center because the first one was not paying 85 cents a pound anymore.  I am not willing to give my cans up for 65 or 50 cents a pound.  So we found another place that pays 85 cents a pound!  Dad and I brought them 144 lbs. of cans!

June 15-22, 2010

More and more people are learning about my program!  Every once in a while I find a bag of cans at my front door, or I'll get a text saying "I want to become a program participant.  I will leave cans by my front door.  Good luck with your recycling!".  Putting the fliers on every ones door is really helping!

June 1-7, 2010

I have decided that I need to advertise more, so Dad and I are walking the neighborhoods putting fliers on every one's door.  I am trying to cover the square mile: Deer Valley, 75th Ave., Beardsley Rd, and 67th Ave.

One of my new program participants (Ms. Wendy) gave me a new can crusher!  She was so exited to help me collect cans.  I read the box that it came in and it said that it instantly crushes most cans to one inch thick!  Thanks so much Ms. Wendy!!

This week, dad and I went to the recycling center with 144 pounds of cans!!  They pay .85 cents per pound.  We couldn't take the last 45 pounds because they didn't fit in the van.  We will be going there again soon.

This week I got an aluminum Coke bottle!!!!!  The is my favorite piece of aluminum.  I collected this aluminum bottle from one of my "program participants" who brought it back from Utah.

My sister went to a birthday party and I put some of my corrugated trash cans there.  I am hoping for a lot of cans.

My school librarian likes to golf.  She is checking to see if the golf course she goes to can help me save cans too.

April 18-24, 2010

This week, our refrigerator broke and we had to get a new one.  But I can recycle the old one at a recycling center for $20!!!!!

My dad designed 4 corrugated trash cans that we are setting up at the baseball field or other short term events.

I didn't collect cans from my program participants on Saturday because my brother, dad and I went to this thing for special needs kids called Challenge Air. They take kids in a airplane that only has 4 seats, and I got to go up too!!!

I have almost finished crushing another 20 pound bag of cans!!

April 11 - 17, 2010

Dad and I went to Fry's Electronics to look for a video card.  I, of course went to the Mac department and found some cool software that I want to add to my budget.

The Dodge Theater gave me their first wave of cans!  They came in this really cool bag.  The bag is clear with a big green recycle sign then says "Spread the word"!!
Isn't that cool:)?

A teacher at school gave me 2 MacWorld magazines all about Mac and some accessories.

April 4 - 10, 2010
Mom found bright green paper for me to print my 1/2 sheet flyers on - thanks Mom!

Friends are bringing me their cans.  Friends of my Mom's are bringing cans.  Cans, cans, cans!

Our babysitter works in a medical office.  I gave her my flyer and a business card.  She is going to see if she can get her office to collect cans for me.

A friend of my Mom's likes my idea.  She works for a large venue place that uses aluminum cans.  Now she is going to save for me too.

Collected cans in our neighborhood and 3 more neighbors became Program Participants.

Collected about 10 pounds of cans from a school function.

Went to the baseball park with Dad on Saturday and collected a half bag of cans.  We hope that this increases as the weather warms up!

March 28 - April 3, 2010
My Mom surprised me by ordering me a personalized tshirt with my project idea on it and business cards.  Wow - my own business cards!  Now I can give out business cards to my friends and neighbors and they can call me or text me to pick up their cans.   I gave my business card to the principal at our school and my teacher and showed them my new cool tshirt.  The principal talked about me on the morning announcements and showed my business card - cool!

I decide it is time to start branching out.  Dad goes with me on Tuesdays (the night before recycle trash pick up day) and we ask people permission to take cans out of their recycle bin.  I do all the talking, introduce myself and give out my flyer.  The people are so nice!

I got a huge donation this week!  A friend of a friend of my Mom's had been saving cans for a while.  I told him all about what I wanted to do.  He was impressed and gave me all his cans - about 48 pounds!  Thanks Mr. Hector!

A friend of my Mom's suggested I go to the little league practices and games and look for cans there.  She gave my Mom info on the man who runs the "snack shack."  He said I am free to go through the recycle container and look for cans there!  I can't wait until it gets warmer...not a lot of cans yet, but this could be good!

On Saturday, Dad and I went to the baseball park to collect cans.  While collecting cans from one trash can, I noticed a bull snake about 3 feet from my Dad's foot!

Snake Picture!

The snake moved to the water fountain and decided to hang out there for a while.

March 21 - 27, 2010
I wrote a letter and took it around to Home Depot, Lowes and Walmart.  Home Depot got me started with a small donation that I used to buy 8 storage containers for what I call my "program participants."  The big can users get a storage container, others get a bag.  I also created a flyer and started asking neighbors to help me save cans.

My Grandma works in a medical office.  She went around telling her co-workers all about my program idea and they said they would save cans for me.

March 14 - 20, 2010
It is spring break and Dad and I have been discussing ways I could earn some extra money so I can save up to buy a MacBook.  I have always been interested in recycling and I was already saving the aluminum cans that our family uses.  This is a great idea!  Now I have to tell everyone!
